Herzlich Sidelined, Captains Named as Practice Kicks Off

August 10, 2010

It’s only been two days of practice for the Boston College football team, but there hasn’t been a shortage of news to report.

Linebacker Mark Herzlich, who hasn’t participated in football-related activities since the 2009 Spring Game as he recovered from Ewing’s Sarcoma, was sidelined for the opening practice Monday. Herzlich suffered a foot injury during summer workouts; whether it is connected to undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery during which a steel rod was inserted into his leg is unknown, and he is listed as day to day.

He is currently No. 1 on the depth chart at strongside linebacker, though he likely will not participate in Friday’s full-contact practice or Saturday’s first team scrimmage.

The Eagles also selected four team captains, all seniors, today. Offensive lineman Anthony Costanzo, defensive end Alex Albright, safety Wes Davis, and fullback James McCluskey received the title.

Costanzo has started every game one the offensive line since his freshman year, and is considered one of the top college left tackles in the NCAA this season. He is also in line to receive a Rhodes Scholarship. Albright was second on the team with eight tackles for a loss in 2009. Davis started all 13 games for the Eagles last year, leading the team in interceptions. McCluskey, who has battled injuries throughout his college career, appeared in eight games last season after tearing his Achilles’ tendon in the spring.
